Optimism, tension amid uncertainty
Press Enterprise- One week after their Waterman Canyon house burned, JoDee and Steve Ewing learned the price of having too little insurance. A check mailed a month late in September was never cashed by the Ewings' insurance company. When the Old Fire reached their 75-year-old house, they didn't know their policy had expired. The Ewings had counted on coverage of more than $400,000. Instead, the couple expects only their $150,000 mortgage will be paid, through a separate policy.

Couple tries to put their losses behind them
Press Enterprise- For Penn and Susan Lenson, mourning will have to wait. Last month, flames that tore through the hills east of Temecula reduced the couple's modular home to fine ash and twisted metal. Press Enterprise- Just 40 feet from a Big Bear City subdivision, in a stand of Jeffrey and pinion pines, rest the remains of a Serrano Indian home that probably dates back 350 years. On Oct. 30, as the Old
Fire made an eastward run through the San Bernardino Mountains, threatening to close the distance between Running Springs and Big Bear, a line of bulldozers
hired by the U.S. Forest Service tore through the earth at the edge of the subdivision to create a firebreak nearly two miles long and 40 feet wide.

San Bernardino Sun- At least two people saw men in a gray van throwing matches into the canyon early Oct. 25. Forty-five minutes after the Old Fire started, sheriff's deputies learned of the arsonist from a resident who spotted the men with binoculars.
