On Oct. 30, as the Old Fire made an eastward run through the San Bernardino Mountains, threatening to close the distance between Running Springs and Big Bear, a line of bulldozers hired by the U.S. Forest Service tore through the earth at the edge of the subdivision to create a firebreak nearly two miles long and 40 feet wide.
