Southern California fears worse to come for fires
MSNBC- When they weren’t racing to mountainsides and canyons to fight fast-moving, potentially deadly blazes this week, firefighters sometimes found themselves scratching their heads. They do not usually see such major blazes in Southern California before Aug. 1. Most happen in October — the height of fire season — when hot Santa Ana winds can push flames across huge areas.

Mudslide hits California youth camp
MSNBC- A mudslide swept over a Greek Orthodox youth camp Thursday, trapping up to 30 people as heavy rains triggered flooding in areas ravaged by deadly wildfires last month, authorities said. advertisement Nine to 12 of those victims were rescued from the Saint Sophia Camp in Waterman Canyon, just north of San Bernardino, authorities said. Two rescue teams were headed to the camp Thursday night in search of more people — one hiking up the canyon and the other hiking down because the road was washed out.

One Highway Is Opened as Another Is Closed
Mountain News- Highway 18 through the so-called "Narrows" is now open for traffic after being closed following the Old Fire due to rockslides and other hazardous conditions. CalTrans crews removed the barricades at 5 p.m. last Friday evening allowing vehicles to make the short trek between the Crestline cutoff and Lake Gregory Drive.

REBUILDING PLAN ADOPTED
Mountain News- The Cedar Glen area represents some of the "greatest challenges" to bringing the area up to current building standards and codes and to reconstruct the area to a level that meets current health and safety hazards following the Old Fire, according to a report adopted by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors during their Dec. 16 meeting.
